Veronica's Message

Hello!

My name is Veronica Go, and I am currently a Junior at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, studying Statistics and Biochemistry, Cellular, and Molecular Biology. I am in the pre-medical concentration, and one day, I hope to be a practicing doctor! I am writing in hopes of being able to visit Nicaragua to provide free medical care for those in rural areas.

When I visited Honduras this summer, I realized that I had a strong passion for helping those around me. Whether it was helping workers build foundations for buildings, helping a child get a ball off of the roof of a building, or giving bread and Coca-Cola to the elderly, I perpetually felt an internal reward - a feeling of happiness and bliss. I also became aware that my Spanish speaking skills were better than I had previously thought. While I know I wasn't able to change the Hondurans' lives in the time I was there, I was able to give them a moment of my time. Though this trip was very short, I realized that I wanted to help more people. My eyes were opened, and I knew I had to go back.

Upon arrival into the United States, I never thought I would have the opportunity again. However, I happily stumbled across "Global Medical Training", a medical organization, at my home university. I instantly fell in love. Not only did it provide a stepping stone towards my ultimate career aspirations, but it also allowed me to travel abroad and help other people. In essence, the organization was the perfect fit for me.

This December, I hope to go back to South America. This time, I hope to be able to spend a week of my winter break in Nicaragua to provide proper medical care to the people. I wish to be able to improve the quality of their lives, as well as mine. My goal is to become more knowledgeable in health care, volunteerism, and the Spanish language.

My hope is that you, or people that you know, can aide me in going to Nicaragua. Even if you can only provide a small contribution, I would really appreciate it. With your donations, I hope to be able to help others out for free.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I really appreciate your time!

Sincerely,
Veronica Go

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Medical Training at the University of Tennessee is so excited to be a new student organization on campus! Read more about our chapter below, our mission, our trip, and donate if you feel inclined!

This December, the UTK chapter of GMT is headed to Nicaragua for a week long medical mission trip.

Global Medical Training is a non-profit humanitarian organization that provides free medical-dental services to underprivileged villages in Central America

GMT\'s Objectives:

- To provide, as a team, free Medical and Dental healthcare services, and free medicines to the needy in Latin America

- To teach students basic clinical skills, basic Medical / Dental knowledge, and the art of medicine, in preparation for and during implementation of the clinics

- To provide students with a first-hand experience of cultural, social, historical, and political life in these regions. We will discuss and integrate this into the medical process with our patients. Many issues will be discussed, e.g. the relationship of poverty, education, and Public Health to illness and well-being.
