Public Health Brigades at UC Irvine

  • About
During the school year, we focus on creating awareness in our campus community and on preparing for our brigade trip. We accomplish this through weekly meetings, on and off campus fundraisers, collaborative efforts with other on-campus organizations, and so on.

In preparation for our brigade trip, we collect hygienic and educational supplies to distribute to the families, orphanages, and school in the community we will work in. In addition, we develop a public health workshop for Honduran elementary school students based on the topics produced by Global Brigades. This year we are focusing on social and psychological health promotion.

While in-country, we take part in four construction projects: eco-stoves, latrines, water-storage facilities, and concrete floors. Towards the end of our week-long stay, we direct a public health workshop and assess the local community to see how we can improve the overall infrastructure.

Since last year, we have doubled our member recruitment. As our chapter continues to grow and evolve, so does our passion for international service. We are so excited for our upcoming brigade, and we cannot wait to share our experiences with the rest of our campus community!

University of California Irvine Public Health Brigade March 2017 Honduras

Volunteer Activity Description
Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Public Health Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. On Public Health Brigades, volunteers develop sustainable health solutions and establish a standard of health quality by emphasizing prevention and education. The Public Health Program achieves this goal by implementing in-home infrastructure projects, providing health education, and engaging community members. Each Public Health Brigade will work with individual families, local schools, and community leaders with a focus on holistic and preventative health measures on both an individual and community-wide scale.
