Global Health Summer Internship Panama

Sarah's Message

Dear Good Samaritan:

I wanted to let you know about a very interesting and rewarding opportunity of which I am intimately involved. I am always looking for ways to put to use all of the hard work and knowledge gained from my education at UC Berkeley and USC. This summer I will take a service trip with a group of twenty-five to Torti, Panama with an organization called Global Dental and Medical Brigades to work with under-resourced communities to create a sustainable health care clinic.

Global Brigades is the world’s largest student-led health and sustainable development organization. Each year Global Brigades mobilizes thousands of university students around the world to participate in 9 different skills-based programs to improve the quality of life in under-resourced communities. On my upcoming brigade, I will be working hand-in-hand with doctors, dentist, engineers, and community members.

The basic needs of education, health care, and clean water are luxuries for the majority of the people in Torti, and in the rural communities where we will be working, these luxuries are even harder to find. The average family income per month is estimated to be $100-200 a month.

Everyone has the ability to help someone every day. Sometimes we get wrapped up in our daily routine and miss these opportunities to help those in need. We are not bad people, but some of us tend to get consumed by life. This is a unique opportunity to help people who have not been so blessed to live in communities that have the infrastructure of which we are accustomed. Today you have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of many. I am going to capitalize on this opportunity and it is much appreciated that you want to do the same.

Please join me in supporting the work that I will be doing in the undeserved communities in Panama. Any support you can give will make a tremendous difference. As a donor you are contributing to the sustainability of the Dental and Medical Brigades’ work in these communities. To make a donation please visit my fundraising page.

Why Participate in the Internship?

From a 2012 Summer Intern-

\\\"For the first several weeks after I got home from the internship, I was unable to talk about anything else. I told anyone and everyone who would listen everything I had done, learned, and experienced. Spending a whole month in Honduras working with Global Brigades and getting a glimpse of its long-term successes inspired me and brought me alive. And from conversations with my fellow interns, I know they felt the same transformation and the same desire to share their experience when they returned home.\\\"
