Brandeis Microfinance Brigade Feb 2014 Honduras

Noah's Message

Dear friends and family,

I hope that this letter finds you with good health, and spirits as high as my own.

Last year, in the midst of reading business cases and economic graphs, I realized that I was more or less dissatisfied with the way my studies were going at Brandeis University. I knew that what I was learning was useful, but I didn’t have a socially constructive outlet for the skills that I was acquiring. With this realization in mind, I founded the Brandeis Microfinance Global Brigade. Along with the two sister chapters at Brandeis ¬¬–the Brandeis Medical and Public Health Global Brigades– we will be working to alleviate poverty in rural communities, using the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom.

This coming February, I will be leading a group of seventy passionate Brandeis students to Honduras, through the Global Brigades initiative. Global Brigades is a nonprofit organization that enables college students to create a lasting impact on under-resourced communities through a holistic approach to sustainable development.

We chose to work with the people of rural Honduras, because of the country’s standing as the 3rd most impoverished country in the Western Hemisphere, as cited by the World Bank. In many villages, it is common for a family of four to live on a daily budget of less than $2.00, and a ration of three gallons of water.

The Brandeis Public Health, Medical, and Microfinance Brigades, strive to improve the quality of life and health of many rural Hondurans, who would otherwise not have access to any form of healthcare or rural banking. This allows us to work side-by-side with healthcare and finance professionals to sustainably improve the quality of health, sanitation, and economic vitality of a community. Our mission is to empower the people who we are working together with, so that they may live healthier and happier lives.

On my upcoming brigade, I will be working hand-in-hand with microfinance practitioners and community members to increase financial literacy, discuss the benefits of interest bearing savings accounts, and provide micro-loans to farmers and small family businesses- all which have the potential to empower families and individuals to build a stronger communities.

The truth of the matter is that without YOUR help, I will not be able to make the journey to Honduras to empower these communities. As you can imagine, this trip has a price tag on it, and there are a few things you can do to make my dream of creating a lasting impact in this community, a reality. Any form of generosity is greatly appreciated, and will put me one step closer to Honduras.
If you are not in the financial position to donate, please forward my letter to any friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors, to help build awareness and support for my cause.

All donations are completely secure and are tax-deductible. Any form of assistance is a great help, and will go towards improving the lives of countless Hondurans who are living without organized sanitation, health-care, medicine, and access to micro-loans. Please let me know if you have any questions about my trip, I’d absolutely love to tell you more about it.

Once again, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for all of your time, help, and support. Every contribution to this cause makes my dream of empowering rural Hondurans to lead a better quality and more sustainable lifestyle, a reality.

Warm Regards,
Noah Litwer

Volunteer Activity Description

Fundraise with your Global Business Brigades chapter on campus to meet the minimum $1,500 USD annual chapter contribution.

The annual chapter contribution directly supports the Community Investment Fund, which enables year-round economic development in partner communities carried out by our local teams. The Community Investment Fund is a critical component to GB’s Sustainable Transition Plan. Once a partner community has met specific health and economic development goals and brigades are no longer necessary, GB transitions projects fully to the community and offers follow-up with our local staff.

The more you fundraise, the more impact we make together!
