University of Maryland Dental Brigade January 2015 Honduras

Maria's Message

I was blessed to be chosen for the University of Maryland's third Global Dental Brigades trip to Honduras in January 2015! As a veteran of the first trip in 2013, I am proud to say that we are a chapter of the world's larget student-led global health organization. We focus on the oral issues that under-resourced rural communities face due to limited access to dental care and address these through immediate dental care, preventative treatments, and education. Without access to dental care, many oral diseases such as gingivitis and dental caries worsen, cause infections, and lead to other chronic diseases. After all, a healthy smile is a happy smile!

If you feel so inclined, please support me on my mission trip! Donations of any size are greatly appreciated, and to show my gratefulness, I have handmade "stuffed animal" teeth and cookies (sugar-free, of course) to share with everybody who donates! Thank YOU for all YOUR help!

Stay smiling,
Maria Oei

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers a 7 day Dental Brigade for volunteers to participate in throughout the year in Central America and Ghana. Dental Brigade volunteers have the opportunity to shadow licensed dentists in urgent and preventive dental services in communities with limited access to healthcare. Dental Brigades also focuses on prevention with dental hygiene workshops. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. A typical brigade structure includes three clinic days and a Holistic Model Day. This unique day allows for medical brigaders to experience one of Honduras’ other programs: Architecture, Microfinance, Public Health or Water. Through these Holistic Model Days, volunteers are able to tackle non-health related issues that are often times the root cause of common illnesses seen on medical brigades. The main health concerns in our communities include diarrhea, respiratory illnesses, waterborne illnesses and abdominal pain.
