SLU Public Health Brigade December 2014 Nicaragua

Giselle's Message

Dear Friends and Family,
I want to share with you a challenging mission trip that I will undertake this December 31 through January 8.
I will be going to Nicaragua with the Global Brigade team from Saint Louis University. The 10 day mission trip will focus on providing sustainable healthcare to rural communities who otherwise have limited access.
As a part of the team, I will work side-by-side with local community members on infrastructure projects that improve the health of the home and surrounding environment like building eco-stoves, latrines and pilas (water storage units). We will also work with local teachers to conduct workshops that teaches sanitation and hygiene practices so families have the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives.
I'm excited about the opportunity and experience that lies ahead. And I hope you see the value in what we will accomplish. As you can imagine, a trip like this requires financial support from a number of people. I need to raise $1800 by December 1. If you can support me on the global brigade team, in a financial way, I would be very grateful. And, most importantly, I also need your prayer support. Prayer is the fuel that will allow us to be successful as we follow God's ministry in Nicaragua. Without prayer, nothing will happen.
Thank you in advance for your support.
Love Giselle

Volunteer Activity Description

Medical Brigade volunteers will set up temporary clinics in pre-identified communities in Eastern Panama to provide healthcare where access is limited. Each community receives a brigade every 3-4 months. Students on the brigade are given the opportunity to shadow licensed health care professionals while learning about local Panamanian culture. A typical Medical/Dental Brigade clinic consists of six stations: Intake, Triage, Consultation, Dental, Charla (health education), and Pharmacy. Electronic patient records are collected during the brigade to ensure patient follow-up as well as to monitor overall community health trends. Between brigades, the in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and conduct community health worker training aimed at empowering local leaders to perpetuate a consistent level of health care. For every student who volunteers on a Global Medical Brigade, sixty patients can see a doctor who otherwise would not be able to.

Public Health Brigades volunteers empower under resourced communities in the developing world to decrease life threatening diseases by improving home infrastructure and providing public health education. Working side-by-side with community members, volunteers improve the overall infrastructure within the home by building compost latrines.
