Brandeis Public Health Brigade January 2015 Honduras

Amy's Message

Hello friends and family!

My name is Amy Zhang and I am currently a first year at Brandeis University looking forward to studying Health: Science, Society, and Policy. After my time at Brandeis, I hope to continue learning about global health and management and work in the healthcare field.

I have been given the incredible opportunity to travel to rural Honduras this January with a group of my fellow Brandeis students to work alongside Hondurans in order to improve the health and hygiene of a community. This will be done through various public health projects that include the construction of latrines and concrete floors, and teaching the locals essential public health and sanitation practices.

We will be making this trip as a part of Global Brigades, the world’s largest non-profit, student-led global health and sustainable development organization. There are nine programs within Global Brigades, some of which are Medical, Microfinance, and Public Health. These programs allow college students like me to work one-on-one with locals to improve under resourced regions in Ghana, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Many of these branches operate in the same communities to enable holistic development. By working directly with locals, we are able to create a more sustainable society.

I am extremely excited for this opportunity but it won’t be possible without your help. If you would like to support my journey, any donation is greatly appreciated and puts me one step closer to Honduras. If not, please help share my mission with friends, family, and co-workers.

Thank you so much for your time and generosity! If you have any questions about Global Brigades, this trip, or myself, please feel free to contact me at amyzhang@brandeis.edu.

To donate please click on the Donate Button to the right and then select the make a donation on behalf of a volunteer option, and select Amy Zhang.

Thank you again for your love and support!

Volunteer Activity Description

BU volunteers spend 7 days in Honduras, improving basic home infrastructure and providing health education to help reduce the incidences of life-threatening, but preventable, diseases in a rural community. With an understanding of the holistic model that focuses on education, community health sustainability and infrastructural development, volunteers first receive a comprehensive introduction to the country's public health challenges and the Public Health programs ground-up solution. They will take a tour of the community Public Health is currently working in, introduce themselves to the beneficiary families, and meet with the Basic Sanitation Committee (CSB). Then, working side-by-side with community members and local masons, volunteers construct four infrastructure projects meant to improve the health of the home and surrounding environment: eco-stoves, latrines, pilas (water storage units), and concrete floors. Additionally, as a key component of the program, Brown volunteers collaborate with the Basic Sanitation Committee and local teachers to help provide community-wide education workshops and training, proliferating sanitation and hygiene practices and empowering families with both the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives
