I’ve always wanted to make an impact in this world, or to change someone’s life for the better. Being part of the Global Medical Brigades took my dreams of helping others and made it a reality. Having already completed one trip to Honduras, I’ve learned that my reasons for wanting to help have now become my mission. It’s heartbreaking to know that there are people in this world that don’t have simple amenities such as clean water or access to a doctor and medication. I want to see the smiles of the people in the community of Nicaragua after experiencing the taste of clean water and receiving medical care (things that we take for granted).

For those who have yet to experience a medical mission, this is an abbreviated version of what I experienced:

We travel miles in a bus to reach a community called, Agua Caliente. No one knows what to expect or what our first brigade will be like. The smooth highway pavement turns to rough terrain and gravel as we climb the mountain to reach the community. We see people walking beside the bus in the sweltering heat as we ascend the mountain, giving a smile and waving as we pass them. We finally reach the community of Agua Caliente atop the mountain. There is a line with a minimum of 150 people on it waiting to see US. It was then that I looked down the path where we just came from….The people we had passed on our ascension of the mountain to our destination were walking 4 hours in the heat to see US. No sentence can be fabricated to describe the overwhelming feeling at that very moment. We worked hard and gave medical care, medication and dental care to the people of the community; all things that they had never received before.

My last day of the brigade an elderly woman grabbed my hands and prayed for me, with tears in her eyes she looked up at me and said, “thank you for giving us hope”.

This is what fuels my desire to help.

I went into the Global Medical Brigades hoping to make an impact in the world, and to change someone’s life, and I am blessed to say that I have done these things. I can also say that the people of Honduras did the same for me. Every accomplishment in life seems insurmountable compared to what I’ve accomplished in Honduras. I look forward to doing it again in Nicaragua!
