DePaul Ghana Medical Brigade June 2013

Silvia's Message

Hello Everyone,

After completing my Freshman year at DePaul, I had the amazing opportunity of being part of the June 2010 Medical Brigade trip to Honduras. I was in charge of conducting a 15 minute "Charla" where I talked about how to live more a healthy life. I met a lot of amazing people while conducting the Charla and learned about some of the struggles they were facing. One thing that has stuck to me is that despite their struggles, they looked at the bright side to life and were determined to push forward to overcome those struggles. I learned a lot while talking to the people from Honduras and I can definitely say it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

As some of you may know, I will be graduating this upcoming June and wanted to end my college experience by going on another Medical Brigade, but this time I will be going to Ghana! Our brigade will be administering a 3-4 day long clinic and conduct health workshops. We are all excited about this trip and look forward in making a positive impact in the communities.

In order to make this trip possible, I need your help! I am trying to raise as much funds as possible to help pay for my flight. Any amount is GREATLY appreciated!!

You can make a donation to my account by simply clicking on the orange button that says 'DONATE'.

Thank you in advance and I hope you can help in this great cause!

Sincerely,
Silvia Barba

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Medical and Dental Brigades in Ghana work alongside each other on a 10-day long brigade in under-resourced communities around the central region of Ghana. Each medical and dental brigade incorporates a public health portion at the end of the 4 clinical days. The 10-day medical and public health brigade provides volunteers with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on communities while gaining hands-on experience in the field of international medicine. Prior to travel, volunteers collect medicines, recruit health professionals and fundraise. Once in Ghana, the team will visit one partner community to administer a 3-4 day-long clinic and conduct health workshops. During clinical days, community members are able to consult doctors and dentists, fill any necessary prescriptions, receive necessary dental care, and sit-in on health education lectures.
