McMaster Medical/Dental Brigade May 2014 Honduras

Maria's Message

Global health means taking the health care and public health practices we practice in our own city, to places all over the world and ensuring that globally, health care is being delivered equally and as extensively as possible.

I have a passion for global health, and I believe that causes like this can help bridge the gap between developed nations and developing nations when it comes to health care and safe health practices.

By sharing our knowledge of simple things such as transmission of infectious disease, household health practices, and most importantly prevention methods, we can educate these nations and essentially make them healthier places.

With these donations, not only will you be supporting a student on a mission, but you will also be providing support to the people of Honduras who are in need of our Brigade team.

Thank you in advance for all your help towards this cause!

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades Honduras offers 7 day Medical Brigades for volunteers to participate in throughout the year. During a medical brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.

A typical brigade structure includes three clinic days and a Holistic Model Day. This unique day allows for medical brigaders to experience one of Honduras’ other programs: Architecture, Microfinance, Public Health or Water. Through these Holistic Model Days, volunteers are able to tackle non-health related issues that are often times the root cause of common illnesses seen on medical brigades. The main health concerns in our communities include diarrhea, respiratory illnesses, waterborne illnesses and abdominal pain.

McMaster Global Medical Brigades will be partaking in a 10 day Medical/Dental/Public Health hybrid this coming May in Honduras.
