Chapman University Medical/Dental Brigade May 2015 Honduras

Lauren's Message

Hi, my name is Lauren Frey, this summer, I will be traveling with a group of 40 students from Chapman University to Honduras with an organization called Global Medical Brigades. I am very fortunate to be participating in this amazing program that enables me to help others while further developing my own skills in health services. On this service trip I have the chance to work personally with under-resourced communities in Honduras.
Global Medical Brigades is part of the world’s largest student-led health and sustainable development organization. Each year Global Brigades mobilizes thousands of university students around the world to participate in 9 different skills-based programs to improve the quality of life in under-resourced communities.
Honduras is cited by the World Bank as the third poorest country in the Western Hemisphere after Haiti and Nicaragua and has been designated as a priority country by the Pan American Health organization/WHO Strategic Plan. The basic needs of education, healthcare, and clean water are luxuries the majority of these people cannot afford. In the rural communities where we will be working, these necessities are even harder to come by. It is extremely common for a family of four to live on less than $2.00 a day with less than 3 gallons of water per day available for use.
On my upcoming brigade, I will be working hand-in-hand with doctors and community members to set up a medical and dental clinic to provide free services to this underserved community. I would appreciate any donation you can give to support the work I will be doing. All donations are tax-deductible. Any support you can give will make a tremendous difference. Thank you!

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
