January 2014 Columbia Public Health Brigades

Keisha's Message

I have been fortunate to participate with Global Brigades for the past two consecutive years, and I cannot even begin to encapsulate the transformative experience it has provided me. During my first brigade I found myself at a loss of words by the purity and subsistence of the land as well as the beauty of the people. However, despite the vibrancy of this trip, I continued to encounter this eerie, yet oddly familiar feeling. These particular sentiments seemed to heighten when I watched the other brigaders play and take pictures with the Honduran children. I couldn’t explain why these instances brought me uneasiness, however, at the snap of each photo and the squeeze of each playful hug, these feelings reoccurred. Upon my return to Honduras in January of 2013, I was baffled by the reoccurrence of these same sentiments, and it wasn’t until the end of the week that I finally received revelation of the subconscious realizations that were occurring. I am half Native American, and I grew up on the Navajo reservation in Northern Arizona where I also attended school as a child. I vividly remember the missionaries that would travel across the country to build us a new school because our current building was poorly constructed and lacked adequate infrastructure (a standard reflective of the living conditions on my reservation). They worked relentlessly, and during lunchtime would join my classmates and me, playing and taking pictures with “the little Indian children.” It was these precise memories that were being translated into my experience in Honduras, and I wasn’t too sure how to internalize such familiarities. However, as these reminiscent moments persisted, I was finally able to take a step back and acknowledge their significance. I was now on the opposite end of the spectrum, no longer a child receiving resources but an empowered young adult providing services to a community in need. What I found most potent was that despite my youth, it proved that I have the capacity to make a difference and impact the lives of others.

Volunteer Activity Description

PHB volunteers spend 7 days in Honduras, improving basic home infrastructure and providing health education to help reduce the incidences of life-threatening, but preventable, diseases in a rural community. With an understanding of the holistic model that focuses on education, community health sustainability and infrastructural development, volunteers first receive a comprehensive introduction to the country\'s public health challenges and the Public Health program\'s ground-up solution. They will take a tour of the community Public Health is currently working in, introduce themselves to the beneficiary families, and meet with the Basic Sanitation Committee (CSB). Then, working side-by-side with community members and local masons, volunteers construct five infrastructure projects meant to improve the health of the home and surrounding environment: eco-stoves, latrines, showers, pilas (water storage units), and concrete floors. Additionally, as a key component of the program, volunteers collaborate with the Basic Sanitation Committee and local teachers to help provide community-wide education workshops and training, proliferating sanitation and hygiene practices and empowering families with both the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives.
