UIC Medical/Dental/Public Health Brigade March 2015 Nicaragua

Ira's Message

Hello, my name is Ira! Thank you for stopping by and reading this message. In March of 2015, I will be participating in UIC's Medical/Dental/Public Health Brigade in Nicaragua and I am so excited! Living in the first world country, it is very easy to take basic things for granted such as food, water, shelter, clothing, and access to health care because of its accessibility. Sadly, most of the world does not have disposable access to these things. In Nicaragua, the average family income is less than a dollar a day and health care isn't available for most of the people there. Outside of Global Bridges, 20% of the population have never seen a doctor before. As a young high school student, I decided that I wanted to dedicate my life to become a dentist in order to give free services to the underprivileged as well as provide basic necessities for everyday living. Being only a junior in college, I am still far away from that dream. However, through this brigade, I will be able to get a glimpse of what I am working towards. If you are willing, I ask for your support towards this endeavor whether it be through monetary donation or by prayer. I assure you that your money will go towards changing the lives of the underprivileged citizens of Nicaragua. I wish you a great rest of your day and may you be blessed!

Volunteer Activity Description

Medical/Public Health Hybrids: Global Brigades offers 9-day Medical/Public Health Hybrid Brigades throughout the year in Honduras and Nicaragua. During the Medical component, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. During the Public Health component, volunteers develop sustainable health solutions and establish a standard of health quality by emphasizing prevention and education. The Public Health Program achieves this goal by implementing in-home infrastructure projects, providing health education, and engaging community members. Each Public Health Brigade will work with individual families, local schools, and community leaders with a focus on holistic and preventative health measures on both an individual and community-wide scale.
