UMB Medical/Dental January 2014 Honduras

Holly's Message

This will be my second trip to Honduras and I'm so excited to be returning. My first trip was amazing but I'm even more excited for this one because not only will we be helping people but I will also be gaining real life experience in the health care field I'm currently trying so hard to become a part of. Unfortunately, this trip is not free so I'm asking for donations from all of my loved ones (YOU) towards this trip. I know a lot of my friends, like me, are tight on money but seriously anything helps! Just to show how much money can go a little way. Although for this trip we were in Honduras to help build a school, we met a little girl who lived in the villa we were working in and had a growth on her arm which started hurting her badly while we were there. One day we each put in a dollar and sent her to the clinic to get it checked out. There she found out that it was just a really bad infection so they got medicine for her and her brother who she had always been carrying around (he is the little boy that is with me in my picture). They also got a bottle of Lysol to disinfect her house. It was amazing what one-dollar from each of us could do. Please read more about what the Global Medical Brigades does and consider donating!

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient receives a physician consultation, public health talk, and prescribed medicines as well as have access to PAP smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Children, in addition, receive teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and vitamins necessary for proper growth and development. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
