Public Health Brigades Penn State Panama

Penn State volunteers spend 7 days in Panama, improving basic home infrastructure and providing health education to help reduce the incidences of life-threatening, but preventable, diseases in a rural community. With an understanding of the holistic model that focuses on education, community health sustainability and infrastructural development, volunteers first receive a comprehensive introduction to the country\\\'s public health challenges and the Public Health program\\\'s ground-up solution. They will take a tour of the community Public Health is currently working in, introduce themselves to the beneficiary families, and meet with the Health Committee. Then, working side-by-side with community members and local masons, volunteers construct infrastructure projects meant to improve the health of the home and surrounding environment. Additionally, as a key component of the program, Penn State volunteers collaborate with the local Health Committee to help provide community-wide education workshops and training, proliferating sanitation and hygiene practices and empowering families with both the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives.

Public Health Brigades Summer Special Project

Public Health Brigades works to develop sustainable health solutions and establish a standard of health quality with an emphasis on preventative methods and education, that will augment the other Global Brigades disciplines in Honduras. The Public Health Program achieves this by implementing in-home infrastructure improvements, providing health education and engaging community involvement. The Public Health Internship in Honduras will provide interns with an in depth look into public health issues in rural Honduras and a hands on experience working to solve problems within an in-depth project. They will work alongside the Public Health Brigades Program Team in Honduras on all aspects of the program; health and hygiene education, infrastructure development, and community involvement. Interns will experience how Public Health Brigades fits into Global Brigades’ holistic development model and see the challenges and successes of an international development organization firsthand.

Santa Clara University Dental Brigade Panama

Dental Brigade volunteers have the opportunity to shadow licensed dentists in urgent and preventive dental services in communities with limited access to healthcare through a one week Dental Brigade in Honduras, Panama, or Ghana. Student volunteers can either join an existing Dental Brigades chapter on their campus or create their own chapter and recruit other volunteers to go on a brigade. In conjunction with our program, Medical Brigades, over 80 groups of passionate volunteers systematically travel to Central America to establish mobile dental clinics in over 80 of our community partners. Each of our community partners receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated with fillings, cleanings and extractions, and are given dental hygiene workshops.
