Medical/Dental Brigades at Penn State University

Medical Brigades at Penn State is a chapter of Global Brigades, the world's largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. The Penn State chapter systematically works with more than 300 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement one of nine skill-based programs that benefit more than 130,000 Honduran and Panamanian, Ghanaian, and Nicaraguan community members annually. Global Medical Brigades develops sustainable health initiatives and provides relief where there is limited access to healthcare. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.

Medical/Dental Brigades at Rho Pi Phi

Medical Brigade volunteers have the opportunity to shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists through a one week Medical Brigade in Honduras, Panama, or Ghana. Student volunteers can either join an existing Medical Brigades chapter on their campus or create their own chapter and recruit other volunteers. Each of our partner community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Between brigades our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare.

Medical/Dental Brigades at Rutgers University involves undergraduate students in recruitment of health professionals and procurement of medical supplies and funds for the brigades. Our mission provides a great experience for pre-health students and an opportunity to get involved with networking, third-world issues, and volunteer work.

Medical/Dental Brigades at Seton Hall University

Global Brigades USA is the world's largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. Our mission is to empower volunteers to facilitate sustainable solutions in under resourced communities while fostering local cultures. Since 2005, more than 5,000 volunteers from 110 university groups have traveled to implement our nine skill-based programs to benefit more than 100,000 Honduran and Panamanian community members. Medical Brigade volunteers set up medical clinics in pre-identified communities to provide healthcare where access is limited. Each community receives a brigade every 3-4 months and between brigades the in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and conducts community health worker trainings to empower local leaders to perpetuate a consistent level of healthcare. Dental Brigade volunteers provide urgent and preventive dental services in communities with limited access to healthcare. Each of our community partners receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated with fillings, cleanings and extractions, and are given dental hygiene workshops.

Medical/Dental Brigades at Smith College is a chapter of Global Brigades, the world's largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. The Smith College chapter systematically works with more than 300 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement a medical/dental program that benefits more than 130,000 Honduran and Panamanian community members annually. The mission of Global Medical Brigades is to work with licensed medical professionals and community health workers to provide comprehensive health services in rural communities in Honduras, Nicaragua, Ghana and Panama with limited access to healthcare. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are also collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. At Smith College, we hope to empower young volunteers to resolve global health and economic disparities in under-resourced communities and inspire all involved to collaboratively work towards an equal world.

Medical/Dental Brigades at the Claremont Colleges

Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Medical Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. During a Medical Brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Dental Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. Dental Brigade volunteers have the opportunity to shadow licensed dentists in urgent and preventive dental services in communities with limited access to healthcare. Dental Brigades also focuses on prevention with dental hygiene workshops. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. A typical brigade structure includes three clinic days and a Holistic Model Day. This unique day allows for Medical/Dental brigaders to experience one of Honduras’ other programs: Architecture, Business, Engineering, Microfinance, Public Health or Water Brigades. Through these Holistic Model Days, volunteers are able to tackle non-health related issues that are often times the root cause of common illnesses seen on Medical and Dental Brigades. The main health concerns in our communities include diarrhea, respiratory illnesses, waterborne illnesses and abdominal pain.
