UofM Dearborn Med Brigade May 2014 Hon

Elizabeth's Message

I want to personally thank you for exploring my profile, and learning more about my Medical Brigade this coming May. I am extremely excited to be traveling with students from both U of M Ann Arbor and U of M Dearborn to Honduras, where our Medical Brigade, through Global Brigades USA, will be taking place. Currently, I am in my senior year at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, where I will be earning my Bachelor's degree in Biological Science with a concentration in pre-medical studies. With aspirations of becoming a physician, it has always been a dream and goal of mine to travel to a third world country to offer medical care to children, adults, and the elderly. While in Honduras our group will be servicing rural orphanages as well as villages. This trip is vitally needed to help those who truly have nothing. Due to the extensive list of prescription medications, and supplies needed to bring with us on the brigade, I have set up a goal of raising $1,500 to help decrease the overall cost. If you can help me in any way meet or even exceed my goal, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The people we are servicing in Honduras are counting on us to be able to treat their medical needs, and by raising enough money to purchase every supply and medication needed, we can make that a reality. Again, I thank you for exploring my profile and learning more about this amazing opportunity to help those in need. Feel free to click on any of the links below to learn more. Thank you!

Volunteer Activity Description

Medical Brigade volunteers set up medical clinics in pre-identified communities to provide healthcare where access is limited. Each community receives a brigade every 3-4 months and between brigades the in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and conducts community health worker trainings to empower local leaders to perpetuate a consistent level of healthcare.

Dental Brigade volunteers provide urgent and preventive dental services in communities with limited access to healthcare. Each of our community partners receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated with fillings, cleanings and extractions, and are given dental hygiene workshops
