University of Maryland, Baltimore Medical/Dental Brigade January 2015 Honduras

Christine's Message

I am a first year student at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and I have received the opportunity to participate in a Global Medical Brigade to Honduras this winter on January 3, 2015. You are all probably wondering, “What is a Global Brigade?”. Global Brigades is the world’s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. Global Brigades’ operations are 100% derived from volunteer contributions. In Honduras, currently more than 50% of the population lives in poverty and 40% without access to healthy drinking water. Most rural communities in Honduras are not within several hours of a licensed medical professional and therefore unable to seek the medical attention needed.
Since these programs are 100% derived from volunteer contributions, I would appreciate it sooo much if you would help me on my mission to become a medical-brigadier. The money that you donate will go towards medical services such as medical consultations, dental work, gynecological exams, medications and health education, as well as other medical brigade expenses. Being able to provide these services to under-resourced communities would be incredible. All donations are tax-deductible you will receive an emailed receipt after your donation! No matter how small, each donation will make a huge difference. I want to thank you all for reading my post and I cant thank you enough for helping me achieve my goal!

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 7 day Medical Brigades for volunteers to participate in throughout the year. During a medical brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.
