UNH Medical Brigade Panama JAN 2015

Brian's Message

Dear family, friends, and whoever this may concern,

First of all, thank you for inquiring in my volunteering page. I have an opportunity this upcoming Winter break to visit Panama and volunteer with Global Medical Brigades. As a Sophomore studying Pre-Med Nutritional Science with a minor in International Affairs, I am always looking for experiences to use my acquired knowledge from school and also to broaden my perspective of the world.

I have very limited volunteer experience but what has pushed me to want to volunteer more was an experience in New Orleans, LA, where friends and I helped rebuild communities in the Lower Ninth Ward which were still suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

In January 2015, I will be traveling with a group of medical professionals and fellow students from the University of New Hampshire to Panama, with an organization called University of New Hampshire Medical Brigades. University of New Hampshire Medical Brigades is part of the world’s largest student-led health and sustainable development organization called Global Brigades. Each year Global Brigades mobilizes thousands of university students around the world (Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua, and Ghana) to participate in 9 different skills-based programs to improve the quality of life in under-resourced communities.

This trip is important to me because it is my dream to travel the world and provide affordable, if not free, healthcare to the less fortunate and I believe this is a step to achieving my dream. Specifically on this trip, I hope I can have a holistic experience that brings together the medicine, culture, and people. I also hope we, the UNH Medical Brigade, can fully provide the necessities that the people we care for might need.

Please join me in providing aid to the undeserving communities in Panama by donating to the cause. By donating, you are not only supporting me, but also the people in the communities that we will provide for.
(Also, all donations are tax-deductible. After you make a donation, you will automatically be emailed a tax receipt)

Thank you for your support!

Best,
Brian S. Chea

Volunteer Activity Description

Medical Brigades of New Hampshire is a discipline of Global Brigades, the world's largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. The Medical Brigades of New Hampshire chapter systematically works with more than 350 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement one of nine skill-based programs that benefit more than 130,000 Honduran, Panamanian, and Ghanaian community members annually.

Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
