Brandeis Public Health Brigade January 2015 Honduras

Beth 's Message

Dear Friends, Family, Co-Workers, and Loved Ones,

My name is Beth He, and I am a current junior at Brandeis University studying Neuroscience, Biology, and Health: Science, Society and Policy. After Brandeis, I hope to continue my commitment to public health, and working in underrepresented communities my pursuing a career in medicine.

Two years ago, I traveled to Honduras with 80 other Brandeis students with the goal of implementing safe, affordable, and effective measures to prevent many ailments in rural Honduras. We focused on medical, public health, and the financial needs of the community to make sure our efforts were sustainable. Personally, I participated in the Medical Brigade, which saw hundreds of patients within four days, many of whom traveled two days to get medical care.

This year, I will work with the public health brigade to help construct a wide range of public health projects in the homes of rural Honduras, as well as teach community members about basic sanitation practices so that they can live more healthy and prosperous lives. These life changing, sustainable projects were made possible through the resources, community connections, and tools of Global Brigades.

Global Brigades is the largest student led nonprofit organization that created a movement to empower college students to make an impact on many lives. The Brandeis Public Health, Medical, and Microfinance Brigades strives to improve the quality of life and health of many rural Hondurans, who would otherwise not have access to any form of healthcare or rural banking. This allows us to work side-by-side with doctors and other healthcare professionals to improve the quality of health, sanitation, and public health of a community in a sustainable manner. Participating in Global Brigades has changed my undergraduate experience by helping me realize my passion for public health and international sustainable development.

However, I will not have the ability to return to Honduras to help empower these communities without YOUR help. As you can see, this program has a price tag on it, and there are a few things you can do to make my dream of making an impact in this community a reality. Any form of generosity is greatly appreciated and puts me one step closer to Honduras. If you are not in the financial position to donate, please forward my page to any friends, family, co-workers, and/or neighbors to spread awareness of my cause.

Thank you very much for your time and generosity. Any aid would be greatly appreciated and largely improve the lives of many Hondurans who do not have access to basic sanitation, healthcare, or financial support or guidance. Please reach out to me for more information.

Volunteer Activity Description

BU volunteers spend 7 days in Honduras, improving basic home infrastructure and providing health education to help reduce the incidences of life-threatening, but preventable, diseases in a rural community. With an understanding of the holistic model that focuses on education, community health sustainability and infrastructural development, volunteers first receive a comprehensive introduction to the country's public health challenges and the Public Health programs ground-up solution. They will take a tour of the community Public Health is currently working in, introduce themselves to the beneficiary families, and meet with the Basic Sanitation Committee (CSB). Then, working side-by-side with community members and local masons, volunteers construct four infrastructure projects meant to improve the health of the home and surrounding environment: eco-stoves, latrines, pilas (water storage units), and concrete floors. Additionally, as a key component of the program, Brown volunteers collaborate with the Basic Sanitation Committee and local teachers to help provide community-wide education workshops and training, proliferating sanitation and hygiene practices and empowering families with both the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives
