Boston University Medical Brigade January 2015 Honduras

Alison's Message

During my first semester as a freshman I joined Global Medical Brigades, a secular, international volunteer organization. Global Brigades works with local governments, international and local doctors, and student leaders to develop medical programs with the goal of providing consistent access to healthcare using economically sustainable medical programs that provide consistent access to healthcare at no cost to the patients. I went on my first Medical Brigade in May 2014 to Sartenejas, Honduras, and it was by far one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. I worked in mobile clinics in rural school buildings, took patient vitals, participated in triage, attended physician and gynecology consultations, shadowed a dentist and assisted in the sterilization of instruments, filled and distributed prescriptions under the supervision of a pharmacist, and served as a Spanish-English interpreter for other Brigade members. We saw hundreds of patients, and one of my favorite parts of the trip was conducting twenty-minute health education sessions we had developed over the course of the preceding semester for children concerning daily hygiene, sun protection, and first aid topics.

While I am working to save up my share for this second trip down to Honduras, I would be incredibly grateful for any donations to help me reach my goal of $3,000. Your generosity will make this trip another rewarding experience, and will also go towards buying medication and supplies for the Brigade clinics in Honduras. Any amount will be a tremendous help, and greatly appreciated!

If you have any questions about donating or the program itself, feel free to email me at alisondl@bu.edu.

Volunteer Activity Description

Medical Brigade volunteers have the opportunity to shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists through a one week Medical Brigade in Honduras, Panama, or Ghana. Student volunteers can either join an existing Medical Brigades chapter on their campus or create their own chapter and recruit other volunteers. Each of our partner community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Between brigades our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare.
