Hi everyone!

I am a first year pharmacy student at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. This January, I will be traveling to a remote village in Honduras with Global Brigades. Global Brigades is the world’s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization that has mobilized tens of thousands of university students and professionals through skill-based programs that work in partnership with community members to improve quality of life in under resourced regions while respecting local culture. Under the theory of holistic development, Global Brigades has developed nine programs ranging from medical/dental to microfinance, architecture, business, and public health. I will be embarking on a medical/dental brigade and our mission is to provide comprehensive health services in a rural community in Honduras that has limited access to healthcare by working alongside various medical professionals. Our services will include general examinations, consultations, pharmaceutical care, gynecological examinations, educational workshops, and dental services such as tooth extractions and fluoride treatments.

To date, more than 50% of the population lives in poverty 40% do not have access to clean drinking water. These brigades are often the only times the people of these rural communities have accesses to health professionals and medical treatment.

This experience will be an incredible opportunity! It will enable me to gain valuable insight and knowledge into my future career, as well as allow me to give back to an underprivileged community that needs help.
