Law Brigades at St. Louis University

Law Brigades volunteers work with Panamanian lawyers to provide pro-bono legal consulting to rural communities. Volunteers offer services through a free legal clinic, where volunteers shadow and assist lawyers as they provide legal consulting to community members. Volunteers also work to incorporate unregistered communities to empower them with rights and government benefits that they would not have received otherwise. Law Brigades primarily works with rural communities that are under resourced and largely unaware of their legal rights. Additionally, volunteers provide legal capacity building workshops on various legal concepts to empower communities through education. Between brigades, Global Brigades’ in-country staff works to secure legal outcomes and provide follow-up to the community.

Make the Change - Cassie Laurenzo

Make the Change is a program started by Cassie Laurenzo as a result of a spur of the moment, solo trip to Ghana at the age of 21. The following year, she returned to assess 22 rural villages and gather data for Global Brigades, a non profit she has worked with for many years, to see about expanding their programs to the country. To date, she has provided much needed educational supplies, granted nearly 100 scholarships and provided aid in repairing and building two different school blocks. Her partnership with Global Brigades USA has proven to be a vital partnership in reaching her goals. matias chapter test

Acadia University is a chapter of Global Medical Brigades, an international movement of students and medical professionals working alongside local communities and staff to implement sustainable health systems. We work in remote, rural, and under resourced communities in Honduras, Panama, Belize, Guatemala, Ghana, and Greece who would otherwise have limited to no access to health care. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are provided access to healthcare and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. In conjunction with our Medical Program, Global Brigades also supports communities with economic development, sanitation and clean water projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Our model systematically builds community ownership and collaboratively executes programs with the end goal of sustainably evolving to a relationship of impact monitoring.
