Drexel University Environmental Brigades

Environmental Brigades volunteers work with rural families and community leaders to improve environmental sustainability and livelihood. During the brigade, volunteers utilize household surveys conducted by Global Brigades staff and face-to-face discussions to connect with the community members and understand their environmental needs, and work alongside them to implement solutions to reforest, farm sustainably, and better manage both inorganic and organic wastes. The planting of native tree species restores the biodiversity and nutrient-cycling directly on the families’ land. By creating and utilizing organic fertilizers and natural pesticides, as well as diversifying the number and placement of agricultural plants, soil nutrients are improved while erosion is minimized. Agricultural yields can be increased without dramatically altering the lifestyle of the rural farmers, while in the meantime, the cost of sustaining the farm can be lessened by breaking away from petrochemical fertilizers. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to educate community members on the hazards of waste burning, as well as the environmental and health benefits of setting up composting along with other waste diversion methods.

Drexel University Global Medical Brigades

Medical Brigades is a discipline of Global Brigades, the world's largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. The Drexel chapter systematically works with more than 300 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement one of nine skill-based programs that benefit more than 130,000 Honduran and Panamanian community members annually. Global Medical Brigades develops sustainable health initiatives and provides relief where there is limited access to healthcare. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.

Engineering Brigades at Drexel University

Global Brigades offers 7-day Engineering Brigades throughout the year in Honduras. Engineering Brigades volunteers work with local engineers, technicians and community members to assess water problems and select feasible solutions. During the brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to assess potential water sources, map and survey community land, plan and design water projects, and provide technical follow-up on completed systems. Evenings consist of on-brigade education, where brigaders learn about community and project development, water sources, water system design and materials, data analysis, and project proposals. Volunteers will directly apply these engineering concepts during the brigade and have the opportunity to present summaries of their findings to the community. Construction of the water projects is a result of the collaboration between the Engineering and Water Brigades teams, Water Brigades volunteers, and community members. Together, Engineering and Water Brigades establish sustainable water systems, provide community education on water-related health issues, and empower community leaders to maintain the system. Between brigades, Global Brigades in-country staff maintains relationships with community leadership committees and provides follow-up with water systems.
